ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University men’s soccer team controlled the ball almost all night in its Saturday evening Atlantic 10 Conference match at Hermann Stadium against La Salle. But it looked like it might all go for naught, as neither team could score through the first 84 minutes.

That changed though, in the 85th minute, when Saint Louis’ Diego Konincks beat everyone to a crossing pass from teammate Christian Buendia, then headed it straight down and over the La Salle goal line for a score that proved to be the game-winner in the Billikens’ 1=0 win over the visiting Explorers.

The goal was Konincks’ third of the year and gave SLU its third straight win. The Billikens are 6-3-2 on the season, 4-0-1 in Atlantic 10 play, and are currently on a seven match unbeaten streak. La Salle fell to 4-5-3 overall and 1-2-2 in the league.

Saint Louis, which owns sole possession of first place in the A-10 standings, controlled the action throughout the night and outshot La Salle 22-3 and had an edge of 18-2 in corner kicks. In fact, none of La Salle’s shots were on goal, so the Explorers were not credited with any actual scoring chances.

SLU, on the other hand, had several but couldn’t manage to capitalize until Buendia and Konincks hooked up with just over five minutes left in the game. Jeremi Abonnel played goal for the Billikens and posted his third shutout of the season to get the win.

The game-winning goal came just after a red card was issued to La Salle, so the Explorers were playing one man down. Another La Salle player was issued a second red later in the match.

Saint Louis will step out of conference play for its next match, which will come on Tuesday night, when it will host Central Arkansas at Hermann Stadium. That contest is set to kick off at 7 p.m.

SLU’s next A-10 game will come next Saturday, when it will travel to the Windy City to play Loyola Chicago.
