ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University men’s soccer team had a plan on Saturday. They wanted to slow down the speedy and high-scoring Dayton Flyers in an important Atlantic 10 Conference men’s soccer action at Hermann Stadium.

Dayton is second in the conference for most goals scored this season and Saint Louis knew it couldn’t allow the Flyers to get loose if it was going to pick up a win it needed.

Turned out, the Billikens accomplished their goal. They didn’t allow the Flyers to score. But Saint Louis didn’t score any goals either, so Saturday night’s matchup ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Billikens move to 7-4-3 and 4-1-2 in A-10 play. Dayton extends its unbeaten streak to seven and is now 5-6-5 overall and 2-1-4 in the league.

Saint Louis remains in the mix for the A-10 regular-season title with one game to go. The Billikens are tied for second in the league standings with 14 points, one shy of first-place Davidson (15 points). SLU’s final A-10 match is at Saint Joseph’s next Saturday night.

On Saturday, goalkeepers Jeremi Abonnel for SLU and Dario Caetano for Dayton each posted six saves for the shutouts. The Flyers had a 16-10 advantage in shots, but SLU out-cornered the Flyers 7-6.

Before traveling to Philadelphia for the regular season finale at Saint Joseph’s next Saturday, the Billikens will host Blackburn in their home finale at Hermann Stadium on Tuesday night. Game time is 6 p.m.
