CHESTERFIELD, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team opened its final series of the regular season with a 14-0 beatdown win over crosstown rival Maryville, Thursday afternoon at Weber Field.
The Tritons banged out 17 hits, including seven extra-base hits, on their way to their fifth straight win. It also concluded a sensational month of April, which saw UMSL go 14-4 and vault all the way up to second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings.
Fifth-year senior Mitch Bonczkowski, a native St. Louisan, who starred at Lindbergh High and St. Louis Community College before transferring to UMSL had a huge day for the Tritons.
Bonczkowski had three hits, including hit GLVC-leading 20th and 21st home runs of the season. He also had six RBIs in the game, which moved his season total to 65 — a new UMSL single-season record. In fact, no other UMSL player had ever reached as many as 60 RBIs before this season.
The six RBIs also allowed Bonczkowski to take over the league lead in that category as well. After Friday’s performance, Bonczkowski leads the GLVC in homers (21), RBIs (65), slugging percentage (.864), on base + slugging percentage (1.342). His 21 homers is tied for third in the nation amongst Division II baseball players.

Bonczkowski wasn’t the only UMSL player to have a big day at the plate. Senior third baseman Justin Simard had four hits and three RBIs, while sophomore leadoff man LJ Randle had three hits, an RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
Cleanup man Owen Faith and designated hitter Bennett Cagle both had two hits.
On the mound, grad student Eli Cartwright picked up his second straight win to move his record to 8-3. Cartwright went seven innings, with no runs allowed, with just two hits, two walks, and 10 strikeouts.
Cartwright is now tied for the GLVC lead with eight wins and leads the league with a 2.03 ERA and a .190 opponent batting average.

The Tritons and Saints will continue their series on Friday, with a doubleheader. Game 1 will begin at 1 p.m. Game 2 should begin 30 minutes after the opener concludes.
The series finale will be on Saturday at 2 p.m. All three games will be streamed live on the GLVC Sports Network.
