NORMANDY, MO — Before the 2026-27 began, all the experts believed the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s soccer team was going to be one of the best teams in the country.
The experts thought so highly of the Tritons, they had them ranked No. 9 in the preseason Top 25.
Then the first game of the season happened and UMSL lost 5-0 to then-unranked Pittsburg State.
Five to nothing… to a team that wasn’t ranked in the first game of the season.
That made all the so-called experts question if this year’s UMSL team wasn’t as good as everybody thought they were.
Pitt State, by the way, is undefeated this season and currently ranked No. 3 in the country. So maybe its possible the experts weren’t wrong about UMSL. They just didn’t know how good Pitt State was going to be this year.

In its 12 games since that first game, UMSL has in fact looked every bit like one of the best teams out there. The Tritons have outright won or tied all 12 of those games. That run includes a seven-game winning streak, which was extended to seven when UMSL defeated Rockhurst, 2-0, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game Saturday night at Don Dallas Field.
Overall, UMSL, the preseason pick to win the GLVC this season, is 10-1-2, with a 9-0-1 record in conference games.
With just four league games left, the Tritons own sole possession of first place in the GLVC standings and have already clinched a spot in the GLVC Tournament, which begins October 31 and will conclude with the tournament semifinals and championship game on November 5 and 7 at the Cooper Sports Complex in Springfield.

UMSL’s offensive dominance has been led by homegrown talents Ella Anselm, Maddy Kuhn, and Josie Maddox. Anselm, who grew up in Florissant and went to St. Dominic High leads the Tritons with four goals and three assists. Kuhn, an O’Fallon native, who went to Liberty High, also has four goals with two assists.
Maddox, a four-year starter for the Tritons from Weldon Springs and Francis Howell High, has three goals and a team-high six assists.
The UMSL defense has been dynamite this season too, evidenced by the teams’ current four-game shutout streak. In fact, the only game this year in which UMSL has given up more than zero or one goal was that first game of the season.
Since then, the Tritons have smothered every opponent they’ve faced, just as the preseason experts thought they would.
Goalkeeper Alyssa Wolf, another nearby talent from Freeburg, Ill., has a 10-0-2 record, with just five goals allowed this season and four solo shutouts.

As good as UMSL has been this fall, it will face what might be its toughest test of the season this week, when it takes on No. 16-ranked McKendree (12-2) in a match that will likely decide the GLVC regular season championship.
The Tritons and Bearcats will meet on Wednesday, at McKendree’s Leemon Field in Lebanon, Ill.
UMSL, which hasn’t lost at home at all this season, will host its final home game of the regular season on October 21 against crosstown rival Maryville University.
