COLUMBIA, MO — Fresh off one of the biggest wins of the Eli Drinkwitz era, the University of Missouri football team will face a matchup that has trap game written all over it, as the No. 14-ranked Tigers host ghost from the past nemesis Texas A&M.

Many around the country aren’t sure what to make of the Aggies this season. They were the No. 8 team in the preseason rankings and they won big in their first two games against Missouri State and Arizona State.

But then A&M stepped in it big time, when they were upset (at home) by unranked Kentucky. Then they got mollywhopped the next week by No. 10 LSU. Two bad losses that nobody expected had everyone in and around A&M football reeling.

Last week, the Aggies got back on track by stomping Arkansas. But does that mean the Aggies are back? Nobody’s sure.

That’s why this week’s matchup with Mizzou is such a huge game for that program. A&M can prove itself back on track with a win on Saturday.

For Mizzou, which has been floating on Cloud 9 all week after dominating then-No. 8 Florida 45-17 last week, the question is can the Tigers do it again. And this time, it would be against an opponent whose had their number the last couple of years. A&M defeated Mizzou 38-20 last year and 41-10 in 2024.

“The most important thing, though, is any time that you play (Texas A&M), you’ve got to have an efficient run game,” Drinkwitz said at his midweek press conference. “We haven’t been able to do that, so we have to figure out how to efficiently and effectively run the ball to try to keep his exotic looks and his ability to be in control of the game off the table. But that’s easier said than done.”

Players to Watch: Last week, Mizzou’s quarterback and lead running back were the stars of the game.

Quarterback Austin Simmons threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns, and Jamal Roberts rushed for 212 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Tigers.

For the season, Simmons is third in the SEC, with 1,287 passing yards and second, with 13 touchdown passes, while Roberts ranks second in the conference (and sixth nationally) with 606 yards and six touchdowns.

Mizzou receivers Donovan Olugbode and Cayden Lee are one of the top pass-catching duos in the country and have combined for 61 catches, 929 yards, and 10 touchdowns.

A&M quarterback Marcel Reed, a preseason Heisman candidate, has struggled through five games this year. He threw for 170 yards and no touchdowns last week against Arkansas. And for the season, Reed has completed just 49-of-94 passes for 573 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

Reed is a feared dual-threat player, who has rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns this year.

Reed’s last really good performance probably came in last year’s game against Mizzou, when he threw for 270 yards, two touchdowns, and had no turnovers against the Tigers.

“I’ve been a Marcel Reed fan since 2024,” Drinkwitz said. “He’s gotten his confidence back. They’re back into a rhythm offensively. You know when he can run and pass, make plays with his eyes downfield, he is very difficult.”

Up Next: The Tigers will hit the road and head down south for a matchup with No. 9 Ole Miss, next Saturday. Kickoff at Vaught Hemingway Stadium is slated for 2:30 p.m.

Mizzou’s next home game will come on November 7, when the Tigers will host No. 1 Texas.
