ST. LOUIS, MO — Week 3 of the United Football League season will conclude with what figures to be a physical matchup between the St. Louis Battlehawks and the Birmingham Stallions at The Dome at America’s Center, Sunday at 2 p.m.
The meeting will also mark the return to The Dome for A.J. McCarron, who starred as St. Louis’ quarterback in 2023 and 2024, but is now in his first season as Birmingham’s head coach.
“I’m excited about going back to St. Louis,” McCarron said, via video conference this week. “I made a lot of great friends and had a lot of great fun when I was there… and the Battlehawks’ fans are the best in the league. I expect it to be great.”

Both St. Louis and Birmingham have begun the season the same way. Each club won its season opener, but lost last week, and is now looking to bounce back against a tough opponent.
“They’ve got a quality club over there,” Battlehawks head coach Ricky Proehl said. “Got a good running game and tough defense. They make you earn everything you get. Our job is to be tougher and make the most of the opportunities when we have them.”
Players to Watch: Standout WR Hakeem Butler made his return for St. Louis and caught four passes for 56 yards, including a three-point conversion catch that kept the Battlehawks in the game, early in the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately, not enough of St. Louis’ playmakers made the kind of plays the Battlehawks needed to stay with a high-scoring team like the Dallas Renegades, who defeated St. Louis 31-15 last week.
The Battlehawk defense didn’t get much done either — going from seven sacks in Week 1 to zero in Week 2 — which allowed Dallas to move the ball however it wanted for most of the game.
Safety A.J. Thomas did have a game-high seven tackles and an interception in his second game with St. Louis. The former Western Michigan star played the previous two seasons with Birmingham and was on the training camp rosters with the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers in 2022 and 2023.

Turnovers were costly in Week Two. QB Matt Corral threw two interceptions, a sharp contrast to Week One when winning the turnover battle helped them dictate tempo.
Last week, the Stallions’ defense spent too much time on the field, and the offense struggled to keep pace. Protecting the football will be critical against a strong St. Louis defense at home.
Defensively, however, Birmingham remains a strong unit. They tightened up in key moments last week, holding Houston 1-of-6 in the red zone and forcing field goals repeatedly.
Linebacker Khava Tezino has been a standout, punching the ball loose inside the five-yard line in back-to-back weeks, a legitimate playmaker in the middle of their defensive structure.
To rebound, Tezino and the linebacking corps will need to lead a performance more similar to Week One, as Houston ran for over 170 yards. St. Louis hasn’t shown a dominant rushing attack yet, but that could shift the focus this week.
Up Next: St. Louis will be on the road for three straight games, beginning next week, when the Battlehawks will travel to the nation’s capital to take on the DC Defenders. That game on Saturday, April 18, will kickoff at 11:30 a.m., and will be televised nationally on ABC.
The Battlehawks’ next home game will be on May 8 against the Columbus Aviators.
