LAWRENCE, KS — One of the oldest rivalries in all of college sports will be renewed Friday night, when the University of Missouri football team travels west to take on archrival Kansas in the annual “Border War” game at David Booth Stadium.
Using the term “annual” might not be the correct word, since it had been 14 years since the two teams had played one another, until they met last season in Columbia. Missouri won that game 42-31, much to the delight of a sold-out 70,000-person crowd.
Kansas fans are looking forward to returning the favor this season, with the game being in their home building this year.
Both clubs will come in off season-opening wins last week. Mizzou blasted Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 54-14, last Thursday, while Kansas did the same to Long Island, 51-6, last Friday.
This time, two teams who had a whole lot of fun in their openers, will meet in a matchup to determine braggin’ rights for the next five years because the teams aren’t scheduled to play again until 2031.

Players to Watch: The main focus of Friday night’s contest will definitely be the two quarterbacks. Mizzou’s Austin Simmons, a transfer from Ole Miss, made his first start for the Tigers and light up the Columbia night with 252 passing yards and four touchdowns in his Black & Gold debut.
KU’s Isaiah Marshall, a redshirt sophomore in his first season as the Jayhawks starter, threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns, and also ran for another 49 yards, showing off the dual threat skills that made him one of the top-rated quarterbacks coming out of high school in 2023.
Both teams will look to show off prime running backs, with Mizzou’s Jamal Roberts and KU’s Yasin Willis. Roberts, Mizzou’s No. 2 ballcarrier, whose taking over starting duties with All-American Ahmad Hardy still out recovering from a gunshot wound injury last spring, ran for 753 yards and scored six touchdowns last year.
He had 47 yards on 13 carries, with a touchdown in the opener.
Willis went for 72 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Jayhawks.
The other player Mizzou fans hope to see is All-American left tackle Cayden Green, who sat out the opener, but is expecting to play and start on Friday. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz didn’t say for sure that Green would play when he met with the media this week, but he did say Green was “trending that way.”
“Cayden Green practiced yesterday, about three-quarters of the practice,” Drinkwitz said. “Looked good. Need to see how he responds today. Had a good report this morning on his initial, but meetings are at two, so I’ll have a better idea at two o’clock where that’s at.”

Up Next: Mizzou will be back home next week, when it will host another non-conference game against Troy on Saturday, September 19. Kickoff at Faurot Field is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
