SAUGET, IL — The Gateway Grizzlies finished off a weekend series win with an 11-2 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers, Sunday afternoon at Arsenal BG Ballpark.
Gateway took two of three from Lake Erie by also winning Game 1 of the series on Friday, 11-10. The Crushers won Game 2 on Saturday, 6-2.
In Sunday’s contest, the Grizzlies scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, three in the bottom of the third, and two more in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 6-0 before the Crushers even had a hit yet.
In the bottom of the seventh, Gateway batted around and sent 12 men to the plate to score five runs and push its lead to 11-0. Lake Erie finally got on the board in the ninth inning to prevent being shut out.
The Grizzlies were led by slugging rightfielder Mark Shallenberger, who had two hits, two RBIs, and scored three runs. One of those hits was his Frontier League-leading seventh home run of the season.
It came in the first inning and gave the large home crowd of nearly 1700 fans something to cheer about right away.
New signee Davie Morgan, who played for Lake Erie last season, also had two hits and two RBIs for the Grizzlies.
Righthanded starter Ben Harris (3-2) pitched five scoreless innings and struck out five batters on his way to the win.

On Saturday, Lake Erie’s Pavin Parks hit a grand slam in the second inning that held up for the rest of the night. The Grizzlies totaled eight hits, with Dale Thomas and Mitchell Sanford both registering two, but the home team could only generate two runs in the loss.
The first game of the series on Friday was a thriller, with the teams trading the lead four different times.
Gateway hit four home runs, including a pair of two-run shots by Frontier League rookie Otto Jones, which proved to be the difference in the game. Shallenberger and Cole Brannen also homered that night, as the Grizzlies ended what had been a four-game losing streak.
Claudio Galva (2-0), who came in in relief, tossed 3 2/3 innings to keep the game close until Gateway re-took the lead in the bottom of fifth.

The Grizzlies are now 6-9 on the season and will continue their current homestand by beginning a three-game series against the Evansville Otters on Tuesday. First pitch for all three games against Evansville is slated for 6:30 p.m.
