MARION, IL — The No. 2-seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team scored six runs in the first inning and continued to pile on more hits and more runs throughout the day on its way to an 11-1 run-rule victory over top-seeded Missouri S&T in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament semifinal game, Thursday afternoon at Mt. Dew Park.
UMSL (32-20) will now advance to the GLVC Tournament Championship Round, where it will need to win just one more game to claim its second ever league title and the program’s first since 2003.
The Tritons will face the winner of an elimination game between Missouri S&T and the University of Indianapolis, which will be played Thursday evening. The first championship round game will be Saturday at 12 p.m.
If UMSL wins that game, it will be declared league champ and earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. If the Tritons were to lose that game, there would be a second, winner-take-all title game immediately after on Saturday.

On Friday, UMSL jumped on S&T immediately. The Tritons racked up seven hits and sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom of the first to take an initial big lead.
Justin Terhaar and Mitch Bonczkowski got things started with a pair of one-out singles. Bennett Cagle was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. That brought up Garrett Strenger, who drilled a singled down the right-field line that scored Terhaar and Bonczkowski to put UMSL up 2-0.
The next batter, Cade Grevengoed doubled down the right-field line to score Cagle. Grevengoed then scored on a hit by Ethan Landis, which also drove in Strenger to make the score 5-0.
Justin Simard singled and Landis stole third to bring up LJ Randle, who smacked an RBI hit to make it 6-0 Tritons.
That was all UMSL would need, as pitcher Garrett Brunstetter pitched seven dynamic innings, allowing just one run on three hits, with three walks and four strikeouts to prevent S&T from ever really getting anything going.
UMSL added single runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings, before finishing the day off just as it started, with a bunch more hits and runs in the seventh.
Simard hit a one-out double. Randle smacked an RBI triple to score him, then scored the final run of the day on a basehit by Terhaar. Once the Tritons reached a 10-run lead, the run-rule took effect and the game was declared over.

UMSL finished with 15 hits total. Terhaar and Simard both had three. Randle, Bonczkowski, and Landis each had two, with Randle, Terhaar, Strenger, and Landis all posting two RBIs.
Brunstetter’s complete game victory lifted his season record to 6-0.
