MARION, IL — The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team rallied from behind three different times on Thursday to earn a sensational 6-4 victory over the University of Indianapolis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament game at Mt. Dew Park.
UMSL trailed 1-0, 3-1, and 4-3, but rallied each time to tie the score, before taking the lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, which eventually led to the win.
The Tritons tied the game at 4, on a defensive error by UIndy, then took the lead on a two-run single by Justin Terhaar.
Junior pitcher Dustin Hagens (4-1), who came in after UIndy had taken its final lead in the top of the seventh, got the final seven outs, including a three-up and three-down ninth, to get the win.
Senior Eli Cartwright, who on Wednesday was named the 2026 GLVC Pitcher of the Year, pitched the first 6 2/3 innings of the game for UMSL, and though he allowed all four runs, only gave up four hits and posted nine strikeouts.

UIndy, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, scored the first run of the game on a bunt single in the top of the second. UMSL answered in the bottom half, when Justin Simard smashed a ground-ruled double that scored Cade Grevengoed, who was hit by a pitch, then sacrificed to second, before stealing third.
The Greyhounds got their biggest blow of the day in the third, when Brayton Bowen hit, a two-run home run off Cartwright to make the score 3-1.
UMSL slugger Mitch Bonczkowski answered in the bottom of the third, with his GLVC-leading 22nd homer of the season — a deep, two-run shot to left, which also scored Terhaar, who led off the inning with a single.
The score stayed 3-3 until the seventh, when UIndy took the lead again on a sacrifice fly. Bonczkowski walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but was left on base, when the next three batters all made outs.
Hagens allowed two runners on in the top of the eighth, but pitched out of it with no damage, which set the stage for UMSL’s final dramatic comeback.
Pinch hitter Garrett Strenger singled with one out, then took third when Simard doubled down the right field line. That brought up the top of UMSL’s lineup, led by LJ Randle, who hit a high chopper back to the mound that was thrown away by UIndy pitcher Drake Downing.
Strenger scored to tie the game. Simard advanced to third, while Randle was aggressive on the basepaths and advanced all the way to second.
Terhaar came up, and on the first pitch, the freshman from Troy, Ill., dropped a single into right that scored Simard and Randle to give the Tritons their first lead of the day.
Hagens retired the Greyhounds in the ninth to preserve the UMSL win.
The Tritons (31-20) will now advance to the tournament semifinals, where they will play No. 1 seed and GLVC regular season champion, Missouri S&T (33-16), on Friday at 2 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to Saturday’s championship finals.
The loser will drop to the elimination round, where it will play the winner of a separate elimination game that will be played later Thursday night between UIndy and Drury.
*** INFO UPDATE *** UIndy won the elimination game 12-2 over Drury and will be the opponent of the loser of the UMSL-Missouri S&T game on Friday.
The elimination game will be Friday at 5:30, with the winner advancing to the championship finals on Saturday at noon. If the winner of the UMSL-Missouri S&T game also wins the first game on Saturday, that team will be declared the GLVC champion and earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
If the elimination game winner also wins the first game on Saturday, there will be a second and final game immediately after that will determine the league champion.
All GLVC Tournament games are streamed live on the GLVC Sports Network.

UMSL will head into the postseason with a 30-20 record. It will be the second time in the last three seasons that UMSL has reached the postseason with 30 wins.
