ST. CHARLES, MO — The Lindenwood University baseball team scored early and often, then held off a late rally, to earn a 12-8 win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Wednesday night at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.

Lindenwood scored five runs in the first inning, three more in the third, then added runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to build a big lead. UMSL answered with three runs in the fifth and runs in the seventh and eighth to make the game close, before the host Lions could finally close out the victory.

Lindenwood had 25 baserunners in the game, with 10 hits, 11 walks, and four hit batters, on its way to its eighth straight win. That is LU’s longest winning streak in two seasons and the third straight game in which the Lions scored double-figures in runs.

UMSL had 18 hits in the game, with every starter but one registering at least one base knock. Senior third baseman Justin Simard had four hits and raised his season batting average to .404.

The hitting star for Lindenwood was freshman Sam Driscoll, who continued his hot hitting from over the weekend with two more hits and four RBIs to lead the Lions. Teammate Tanner Simpson had two hits and two RBIs, while Will Geary was on base four times, with two hits and two walks.

For UMSL, Justin Terhaar and Owen Faith both had three hits and scored a run. Faith also had an RBI, while slugger Mitch Bonczkowski, who remains tied for fifth in the nation amongst Division II players with 18 home runs, had two hits, two RBIs, and scored two runs.

Both pitching staffs used the game as a bullpen day, with both teams using several relievers to get through the game. UMSL used 10 pitchers — none pitched more than one inning.

Lindenwood used six pitchers, with senior Michael Walsh (1-1) getting the start. He went 3 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits, with two walks and four striketouts.

LU was ahead 8-2 when he left the game and it never lost the lead, so Walsh was credited with the win. When UMSL made it close late, the Lions turned to senior Luke Wright to get the final four outs. Wright earned a save — his first of the season.

Lindenwood, now 22-18 on the season, will return to Ohio Valley Conference action this weekend. The Lions will host a three-game set against Little Rock, beginning on Friday.

The loss dropped UMSL to 23-19. The Tritons will also return to conference action this weekend, when they’ll host Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Lincoln University in a four-game series at the UMSL Baseball Field.
