COLUMBIA, MO — Marissa McCann pitched a perfect game to lead the University of Missouri softball team to a 7-0 win over SIU-Edwardsville, Wednesday night at the Mizzou Softball Stadium.
It was 13th perfect game in Missouri softball history and the first since Laurin Krings set down every batter she faced in a game against Bradley on March 6, 2022.
McCann went seven innings and didn’t allow a single baserunner, as she retired all 21 SIUE batters who came to the plate. The junior righthander from Surprise, Ariz., gave up no hits, no walks, and struck out 11, including the final batter of the game, on a blazing fastball right down the middle.
“It almost made me want to tear up seeing the way my teammates ran out of the dugout and were so excited for me,” McCann said. “I think that shows a lot about the closeness of this team and the way the coaches embraced me after, it means a lot to me.”
With McCann having a perfect night in the circle, the Tigers were able to do damage as needed at the plate. Cleanup hitter Abby Hay had three hits, including a deep fly home run over the left-centerfield wall — her seventh of the season — to go along with three RBIs.
Junior Stefania Abruscato and freshman Abby Carr both had two hits. Abruscato doubled and scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, then smashed her eighth home run in the third to put Missouri up 2-0.
Redshirt freshman Saniya Hill made her first start since February and took full advantage of the opportunity by lacing three hits, including an RBI infield knock in the fifth that made the score 4-0.
Carr singled home a run in the sixth, then scored on Hay’s homer three pitches later.
After that, the only question left was would McCann complete her perfect night.
She got SIUE’s Juztyne Torres to ground out to short for the first out of the seventh. Then, she struck out Harley Limberger for the second out.
That brought up Ashley Duran, SIUE’s leading home run hitter and top RBI person. But McCann attacked right away and got two softly hit foul balls on the first two pitches.
That set up a dramatic final pitch, where McCann caught Duran looking for the final out, which set off a wild celebration on field, with the entire Tiger team storming out of its dugout to hug and high-five McCann.
“That was just awesome,” Mizzou head coach Larissa Anderson said. “Marissa’s such a talented player and she’s a great kid, all her teammates love her. We were all so happy for her that she got this done.”

The victory itself was also important for Missouri as it chases its goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers need to have a .500 or better record at the end of the regular season to qualify, and Wednesday’s win raised Mizzou’s record to 25-24.
Missouri has seven games left and needs to win at least three of them to be postseason eligible.
The attempt to get those wins will begin this weekend, when Mizzou faces No. 6 Arkansas in a series in Fayetteville. The Tigers and Razorbacks will play single games on Friday (5 p.m.), Saturday (11 a.m.), and Sunday (1 p.m.), with Saturday’s game being televised nationally on the SEC Network.
Mizzou will close the regular season with a four-game homestand next week. The Tigers will play Kansas City on Tuesday, April 28, then take on No. 10 Tennessee in a three-game series next weekend.
The SEC Tournament, which will be played in Lexington, Ky., will begin on May 5, with the championship game scheduled for May 9.
