The Washington University baseball team is 26-9 and ranked No. 15 in Division III, after winning three games on the road this weekend.
WALTHAM, MA — The Washington University baseball team had only played one true road game all season until this weekend.
But the Bears didn’t look bothered by being away from home one bit, as they won three of four games over the weekend against University Athletic Association foe Brandeis University, to improve their overall season record to 26-9.
WashU, which was also ranked No. 15 in this week’s D3Baseball.com Top 25 national poll, also maintained its hold on second place in the UAA. The Bears are 10-6 in conference play and sit one game behind the University of Chicago, which is 11-5, for first place in league play.

Because of weather concerns, the WashU-Brandeis series was played as a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Brandeis won the first game, 3-1, behind a strong pitching effort from righthander Jacob Mauer, who pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits, with no walks and seven strikeouts.
WashU’s Anthony Equale had three of those five hits and drove in the Bears’ lone run, but Brandeis got the win.
The rest of the weekend belonged to WashU though. The Bears won Game 2, 7-2, with every batter in the lineup reaching base safely at least once.
Brandeis scored first again, but WashU responded with three runs in the second and two in the third to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish for the rest of the weekend.
Equale reached base three times in that game as well, with a hit and two walks. He also had an RBI, as did leadoff man Chance Cromer, who added a hit, two runs scored and a stolen base.
Senior lefty Issac Zhang (4-0) was the pitching star of Game 2. He went 8 1/3 innings and gave up just the two runs on five hits, with three walks and four strikeouts. It was Zhang’s best outing of the season, as he picked up his fourth win in six starts and lowered his season ERA to 2.87.

In Game 3, the Bears jumped on the host Judges early, but had to fight off a late rally to get the win. WashU scored four runs on four hits in the second inning, then added two more in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead midway through the game.
Brandeis battled back and got within two runs late, but Bears closer Parker Guthrie got the final out with the potential tying run on deck to preserve the win. For Guthrie, it was his fourth save of the season.
Starter Townsend Stevenson (2-3) pitched five innings and gave up two runs on three hits, with four walks and six strikeouts. First baseman Cooper Greene had two hits and two RBIs to power the WashU offense.
In the series finale, the Bears had several big innings on their way to a 14-9 victory. But the story of the game was WashU setting a UAA record with 13 stolen bases. The Brandeis defense couldn’t stop the Bears from running wild on them.
Kevin Stephens had three stolen bases, while Cromer and Shane Pellegrino and Josh Erpenback each had two. Ryan Soong, Equale, and Jacob Witte each had one.
Pellegrino also did damage at the plate, with three hits and six RBIs. Guthrie (4-1) came in in relief to get the win on the mound.

WashU will be back on the road to close out the regular season next weekend, when they’ll travel to Cleveland to take on Case Western Reserve at that school’s Nobby’s Ballpark.
The Bears and Spartans will play four games — one on Friday (2 p.m.), two on Saturday (11 a.m. and 2 p.m.), and one on Sunday (10 a.m.).
All four games will be streamed live on FloSports.com.
