FAYETTEVILLE, AR — — Quarterback Austin Simmons threw for 179 yards and two touchdown passes, and running back Jamal Roberts had 158 total yards and two touchdowns as the No. 23-ranked University of Missouri football team topped Arkansas 34-10, in a Southeastern Conference game on Saturday night.
Despite beginning the game in a pouring rain, Missouri led 13-7 at halftime. The Tigers’ only touchdown had come on a defensive fumble recovery in Arkansas’ end zone.
But in the third quarter, the rain stopped and Simmons heated up. The junior from Miami connected on five-of-seven passes for 73 yards on Mizzou’s first drive of the second half, which ended with a 15-yard touchdown connection to receiver Donovan Olugbode that put the Tigers up 20-7.
The Mizzou defense forced another fumble on Arkansas’ next possession and capped that drive with a 2-yard touchdown run by Roberts, which effectively put the game out of reach for the struggling Razorbacks.
“It was big. It was a swing of the momentum,” Roberts said of the team’s third quarter. “We just went on a run. That’s something that we like to do on offense, just go on a run.”

Mizzou forced four turnovers in the game — three on fumbles and the fourth on an early interception which led to the first score of the game. In all, the Tigers produced 24 points off Arkansas turnovers and controlled the game from start to finish.
“That was an important win for us,” Mizzou head coach Eli Drinkwitz said. “We spent the last couple of weeks working on some things, working on finding our focus and executing our game plans better than we had been. We knew the weather was going to be a problem, but we wanted to focus on not letting that be too big a problem for what we needed to get done.”

Roberts, who remains the SEC’s leading rusher, finished with 138 yards on 23 carries — his fifth 100-plus yard game of the season. The St. Louis native now has 1,005 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the season. The rushing yard total is third most in the country through eight games.
“Jamal’s had a great year,” Drinkwitz said. “We’ve relied on him and leaned on him a lot this year, and he’s come through every time. It’s exciting to see a young man get his chance and make the most of it the way he has this year.”
After Arkansas had gained a bit of momentum with a long drive that ended with a field goal, Simmons and Roberts combined for a 10-yard touchdown pass that effectively put an end to any thoughts of a home team comeback.
Overall, Mizzou outgained Arkansas 390 yards to 288, with 22 first downs to just 18 for the Razorbacks. The biggest difference, along with the four forced turnovers to just one, was Missouri outrushing Arkansas 211 yards to just 59.
“We were able to control the line of scrimmage pretty good,” Simmons said. “Our big boys upfront, on both sides of the ball really, just kinda dominated like we know they can. Once the weather changed and it just became football again, we were able to be as physical as we wanted and that’s how we were able to get this win done.”

Mizzou is now 6-2 on the season, with a 3-2 record in SEC play. But the Tigers will be making a huge step up in competition next week, when they’ll be back home to face No. 10-ranked Texas in a game at Faurot Field.
Kickoff next Saturday is set for 11 a.m., and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
