CLAYTON, MO — Quarterback Levi Moore threw a touchdown pass and ran for three others to lead the Washington University football team to a 37-14 win over Denison University in an NCAA Division III football game, Saturday afternoon at Francis Olympic Field.
The victory earned WashU a bit of history, as the Bears are 8-0 for the first time in school history.
Moore, who has accounted a North Coast Athletic Conference-best 27 touchdowns (15 passing, 12 rushing) this season, scored on two short runs to give the Bears the lead in the first quarter.
Denison responded with a seven-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a 13-yard touchdown pass from Brian Rager to Kade Koroneos just before halftime to make the score 14-7 at the break.
But the Bears took firm control of the game in the third quarter.
First, Moore hit fellow senior Makael Carter for a 47-yard touchdown. Then, after a bad snap on punt gave WashU the ball deep in Denison territory, Moore punched in his third 3-yard touchdown of the game to make the score 28-7.
Denison answered with another long drive that ended with a Rager touchdown pass, but WashU came right back with a long drive of its own, which ended with a 25-yard touchdown run by sophomore Karsten Cornell.
Junior Matias Adrogue added a 24-yard field goal early in the fourth to cap the scoring and put the finishing touches on another WashU win.
Linebackers Spencer Snipe and Joy Chane led the WashU defense. Snipe had a team-high nine tackles (five solo), while Chane had three tackles and four pass breakups.
The Bears will look to stay perfect next week, when they’ll travel to Delaware, Ohio, to take on Ohio Wesleyan. With a win, WashU can clinch at least a tie for the NCAC conference championship.
The Bears will close the regular season at home on Noermber 14, when they’ll host the College of Wooster.
