NORMANDY, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team had its six-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday, in a 7-2 loss to No. 17 ranked Illinois Springfield, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at the UMSL Baseball Field.
UIS (26-8), which has now won four straight, 11 of its last 12, 16 of its last 18, and sits tied with Missouri S&T for first place atop the GLVC standings, looked every bit like the best team in the conference as it constantly put pressure on the UMSL pitching staff.
The Prairie Stars had runners on base in every inning, but the first, and went four-for-nine with runners in scoring position.
UMSL got out of its first jam in the second inning, when starting pitcher Mitch Schleeper struck out two batters with two runners on base. Reliever Gavin Kinworthy did the same in the third to keep the game scoreless.
But UIS got the hits it needed of Kinworthy in the fourth to go ahead 2-0.
A two-run home run in the fifth put UIS up 4-0 midway through the game.

Freshman Bennett Cagle put UMSL on the board with a rocket shot homer to left to lead off the bottom of the fifth. It was Cagle’s second homer of the season.
But UIS added three more runs in the sixth to break the game open.
UMSL got the final run of the game in its half of the seventh, when UMSL slugger Mitch Bonczkowski drove in Cagle with a ground out, after he moved to third following a hit by LJ Randle and a sacrifice bunt by Justin Terhaar.
The Tritons had a chance to get more in the eighth, with runners on the corners and only one out. But the UIS relief staff got out of the jam with no damage done, then closed out the game with a three-up, three-down ninth.

The Tritons are now 18-15 on the season and 12-4 in the GLVC.
UMSL will continue its weeklong homestand with a four-game series against McKendree this weekend. The Tritons will host the Bearcats for a single game on Friday (2 p.m.), a doubleheader on Saturday (12 p.m. and 3 p.m.), and another single game on Sunday (12 p.m.).
All four games will be played at the UMSL Baseball Field and will be streamed live on the GLVC Sports Network.
