NORMANDY, MO — The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team finished off a four-game sweep over Lincoln University, Sunday, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference series at the UMSL Baseball Field.
UMSL won by shutout in each of the first three games, but had to rally from four runs down to earn an 11-6 win in the finale.
The Tritons had 11 hits as a team — with four players registering at least two hits each — drew eight walks, and had seven hit batters to create activity on the basepaths.
But the big blows of the day came in the same inning, when junior Brandon Johnson led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run — his second of the season — and was later followed by a three-run blast from senior Mitch Bonczkowsi. It was his GLVC-leading 19th homer of the year and gave UMSL its first lead at 6-4.
The Tritons added three more runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth, before Lincoln scrapped together two runs in the ninth to close out the day.
Bonczkowki finished the day with two hits and four RBIs. Teammates LJ Randle, Justin Simard, and Cade Grevengoed also had two hits each. Randle also drove in two runs, scored two runs, and had a stolen base.

Lincoln took the initial lead when it scored two runs in the top of the second. The Blue Tigers added two more in the fourth, before UMSL got on the board with two runs in the fifth.
Randle began the inning with a single. Bonczkowski walked and Owen Faith was hit by a pitch to lead the bases. Luke Saxton drove Randle in with a groundball, fielder’s choice to second.
That put runners at the corners for Simard, who singled home Bonczkowski to make the score 4-2.
In the sixth, Johnson ripped a towering homer over the left field wall to make it 4-3, before Randle and Justin Terhaar walked to bring up Bonczkowski.
The fifth-year senior slugger from Lindbergh High in South County St. Louis, blasted a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall — in almost the same spot as where Johnson’s homer landed — to put the Tritons up 6-4.

Once UMSL had the lead, there was no chance it was going to relinquish it. Six UMSL relievers pitched the final 5 1/3 innings and gave up just the two ninth inning runs on four hits to complete the game.
Junior Mitch Schlepper (1-2) pitched two scoreless innings to get his first win of the season.
The four straight wins lifted UMSL’s overall season record to 27-19. The Tritons are also 21-7 in the GLVC, which is good enough for sole possession of second place in the league standings — one game behind Missouri S&T for first place, heading into the final week of the regular season.

UMSL will be on the road for its final four regular season games. The Tritons will travel to West County to take on crosstown rival Maryville University for a four-game set at that school’s Weber Field.
The Tritons and Saints will play one game on Thursday (2 p.m.), a doubleheader on Friday (1 p.m. and 4 p.m.), and a final single game on Saturday (2 p.m.). Each game will be streamed live on the GLVC Sports Network.
UMSL has already qualified for a spot in the GLVC Championship Tournament, which will be played at Mt. Dew Park in Marion, Ill., May 6-9. The Tritons will find out who’ll they’ll play once next weekend’s action is completed.
