DANVILLE, KY — The Washington University baseball team opened its journey through the NCAA Division III National Tournament with a 7-0 shutout victory over Aurora University, Friday afternoon at Centre College’s Gary Wright Field.
Freshman centerfielder Drew Dillon had two hits, including a two-run single that opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning, and scored two runs to help lead the WashU offense. Junior designated hitter Anthony Equale also had two hits and an RBI for the Bears.
The big blow of the game though, came in the seventh, when Dillon drilled a two-out single and teammate Cooper Greene smashed a deep home run over the left field wall to put WashU up 5-0.
It was the sophomore first baseman’s third homer of the season and it helped provide more than enough breathing room for starting pitcher Chase Brickley.
The senior righthander went 8.0 scoreless innings and gave up just five hits and two walks, with five strikeouts to earn the win. Brickley is now 8-2 on the season and saw his team-best ERA drop to 1.62.

The Bears, who are now 29-11 on the season, will advance to the Danville Regional second round, where they will play the winner of the day’s other first round game, host Centre College versus Piedmont, on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The winner of the second round contest will advance to the regional championship round on Sunday.
The losing team will be sent to the loser’s bracket and play an elimination game Saturday evening. The winner of the loser’s bracket game will then advance to the championship round and would need to defeat the winner’s bracket team twice on Sunday to advance.
All NCAA Tournament games, including Saturday’s second round semifinal game, will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
