NORMANDY, MO — LJ Randle had a strong day at the plate and Brandon Johnson matched it on the mound to lead the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team to a 9-0 win over Lincoln University, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game, Friday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field.
Randle, a redshirt sophomore from Kansas City, had three hits, two runs scored, two runs batted in, and a stolen base, as UMSL opened the four-game set with a win.
Other Triton batters, Owen Faith, Garrett Strenger, and Ethan Landis each had two hits. Both of Strenger’s hits were doubles, and Faith and Landis contributed two RBIs each.
On the mound, Johnson (2-2) earned his second win of the season by tossing seven innings of shutout ball, while giving up just four hits, with no walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts.
The junior from Lemont, Ill., who also serves as UMSL’s designated hitter on days he’s not pitching, began the season as a reliever, but has earned three straight starts this month and picked up wins in two of them.

UMSL got off to a quick start, by scoring a run in the first inning. Randle led off the game for the Tritons with a double, then came around to score on a hit by Mitch Bonczkowski.
The Tritons got their second run when Faith and Strenger put together a pair of doubles in the bottom of the fourth. UMSL nearly got more on a hard hit ball by Justin Simard, but Lincoln pulled off a slick double play to end the inning.
Randle began another rally in the fifth, when he singled with one out, then stole second. Bonczkowski walked on four pitches, then followed Randle home on a two-run triple by Faith.
The big inning came in the sixth, when UMSL got aggressive on the basepaths. Strenger doubled to lead off the inning, then moved to third when Cade Grevengoed singled. Grevengoed stole second just before Simard walked to load the bases.
That brought Landis to the plate, where he ripped a two-run single to left. Simard was at third, when Randle lifted a fly ball to deep center, which scored Simard to make the score 7-0.
In the seventh, Faith walked, stole second, then went to third on a hit by Luke Saxton. Faith and Saxton then pulled off a double steal for a run to make it 8-0.
UMSL’s final run came in the eighth, when Landis led off with a triple, then scored on the second sacrifice fly of the day by Randle.
Three Triton relievers helped get the final six outs, as UMSL improved its record to 24-19. Lincoln is now 6-35.
The teams will continue their series on Saturday, with a doubleheader that will begin at 12 p.m. The final game of the series will be on Sunday and is also slated to begin at 12.
